Cake for breakfast? Why not, especially when there’s whipped cream and berries involved. With the Malibu Farm Cookbook by Helene Henderson, which celebrates California cuisine at its finest, you’ll be pulling pantry staples onto your counters before you know it. Now, let’s get that coffee brewing and dive in.
The Malibu Farm Cookbook will make you rethink your Hollywood image of Malibu. Helene’s Malibu is home to chickens and beehives, a small town on the coast sprouted with organic vegetable gardens and endless summers. And with vibrant photography and easy-as-can-be recipes (Lazy Girl Salsa, anyone?), you, too, will find yourself California dreamin’.
Recipes are arranged according to provenance, from the dairy to the hive, the hen house to the beach house. But it was Helene’s recipes for the baker that caught my attention. With recipes for Salted Caramel Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches and Saffron Ice Cream, it’s enough to make any California girl do a few extra lunges to work off the extra calories.
If the grill is yours to master, look no further than Helene’s Balsamic Skirt Steak with Chili Cherry Tomatoes. Is there a pescatarian coming to dinner? Whip up a Branzino with Salsa Verde or Halibut Sandwich with Black Olive Aioli.
I tried my hand at her Rosemary Whole Wheat Olive Oil Cake, with an ingredient list so brief, I already had everything in my cupboard and garden (note to black thumbs everywhere: growing rosemary is something we can do!). And while I went all omega-3 with walnuts instead of almonds, the result was the same: fabulous.
So excuse me while I brew myself another cup of Donut Shop coffee and dive into another slice of rosemary whole wheat olive oil cake. I’ll wait while you hop over to Amazon to pick up your own copy of the Malibu Farm Cookbook.
