Whenever I dine out with friends they always ask, “What will you be able to eat?” The answer is almost anything natural, whole or fresh. Salads, grilled meat, rice dishes – all gluten-free. And most restaurants, at least in San Diego, either have a gluten-free menu or the staff knows the in’s and out’s of what’s gluten-free on their menu.
If you’re in Encinitas, you’ll find a great little French cafe that serves gluten-free buckwheat crepes. The French Pastry Cafe (127 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas, CA 92024; 760-942-7891) is well versed in the art of gluten-free crepes, and I loved this savory brunch crepe, the Monaco, filled with scrambled eggs, salty ham and tangy cheese. And the best part (besides being gluten-free)? It’s big enough to share with your amour.
Try your hand at making gluten-free buckwheat crepes at home with one of these recipes (note: all three recipe include regular flour; substitute a gluten-free all-purpose flour if needed):
- From David Lebovitz
- From Yotam Ottolenghi
- From Sprouted Kitchen via Food & Wine
