See that empty plate? That’s something most of us see only at the beginning at a meal. But what if that’s what you faced day in, day out, for nearly every meal, simply because you had no food to fill it?
Sadly, that’s the reality for so many in our community, and it hits kid the hardest. While a lot of kids are lucky enough to get hot lunches at school, when the weekend comes they’re faced with empty plates and hungry bellies. Childhood is supposed to be about fun, not hunger.
That’s where the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank comes in. This month, they’re teaming up with local San Diego restaurants and food trucks to help feed hungry kids across the county.
Throughout the month of August, select restaurant and food truck locations throughout San Diego will be promoting a featured dish, and every time that featured dish is sold, they will donate one dollar to the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, a program that provides weekend food to chronically hungry elementary school children. Currently the Food Bank serves 800 children in 22 schools, but with the continued support of the community and the Dollar A Dish campaign, the San Diego Food Bank will serve 1050 children in 26 schools in the 2011-2012 school year. Wow!
You can also help out by donating canned goods and other non-perishables to the San Diego Food Bank’s warehouse location at 9850 Distribution Avenue in Miramar. Otherwise you can drop food off at any VONS location throughout the county until Labor Day. If you want to help spread the word at work or your child’s school, please download and print the Dollar a Dish Poster for distribution.
So if you’re eating out in August, please stop by one of the Dollar A Dish participants and order their Food 4 Kids Featured Dish!

I saw people tweeting about this — sounds wonderful! Any excuse to find the food trucks and taste great food for a good cause sounds good to me. I know that supportive programs like this definitely have an impact on kids. The free school breakfasts & lunches just aren’t enough for them.
