I love the scene in Julie & Julia when Paul Child magically appears in Julia’s kitchen, dwarfed by the sheer weight of the mortar and pestle he has found for the love of his life. I’m not sure if it’s their love or the kitchen tool that makes me swoon, but ever since, I’ve wanted to fly to Paris and haunt the flea markets until I find one exactly like it.
Until that day, I’m making do with this little guy, a perfectly functional tool that has never let me down. I’ve crushed pepper corns for the Barefoot Contessa’s steakhouse steaks, ground turmeric for tandoori chicken from Everyday Food and crushed all manner of spices and herbs in an effort to bring more flavor to my food.

My boyfriend bought me a kitchen aid for christmas a year ago, he got the most expensive professional series one and I was soooo excited! Esp since I didn’t have a mixer at all and had been whipping and beat and mixing everything by hand
